ÀMÒTÉKÙN: Unpredictable and Untamed - Tunde J. Oyedele

A political science lecturer was quoted "any system having not faith in the WELFARE of the people, such is not worth it". Welfarism connotes a statutory procedure or social efforts designed to promote the basic physical and material well being of those in need. Of course, the protection of rights to education, housing, welfare, life and property defines the relevance of security amidst organized welfare conditions. To some, welfarism is all about filling to satisfaction the stomach to cure hunger on the other hand, it concept encapsulate more. For you to feed well, sleep well, attend to daily social, economic, religious and all forms of activities you need foremost the safety of your life and properties. Medical patients that needs emergent or urgent attention cannot get it amidst bandits attacks and obstruction not to talk of an happening guy that wants to visit a relaxation spot on some bottles. This shows us how great is the danger of insecurity when fully blown in a state. Despite how commendable the sophisticated security systems of the United States of America are, the world power nation still faces challenging treats from terrorists, arsonists and likes. This shows how imperative it is for any meaningful government to build up an unshakable defense mechanism for her citizens. Establishment of various security agencies, procurement of ammunitions, channeling a responsive relationship between these security agencies and the citizens cannot be sufficient for our safety. Here, the various security actions taken at our various cove of comfort is justified. Ensuring our doors locked before we sleep and move out to our daily activities relates the consciousness of the citizenry to security. Though the government could not own the sole right as personal security remain paramount. This conscious effort towards security brought about the informal establishment of the night guards "Vigilantee" and the Oodua People's Congress (OPC). These outfits are duty bound by the local community to secure residents within from local robbery and external rival attacks. They enhance the activities of the Nigerian Police Force. Mean while, rising security challenges facing the nation has deepen rooted in creating a lost of trust in the government and her various security agencies especially the Nigerian Police Force. Under the guise of an herdsman, rather than rearing of the cattle, daily killings and illegal domination of lands are seen carried out. These insurgents are recognized as indigenes turn settlers from the Northern region. Allegedly, the Northern cabal comprising of the President of the nation, owns and controls the activities of these rustlers across the nation as such Justice would not be left to take it course. This terrible situation makes the people affected, the Igbos and Yorubas, live their life in daily fear of attack from rival Fulanis. Life is considered most precious to all and sundry hence our vigilance and need for safety. Dealing with the situation, the Police force, the military and other security agencies have proven their efforts abortive. It is not enough to face the insurgents with just ammunitions, it must couple sincerity of purpose on the side of the government and top officials. Not forthcoming with the situation worsen daily, the Yoruba nation through her leaders seize the opportunity to show her displeasure to the daily killings, kidnappings, banditry and other criminal vices in the South-West recently. Lands meant for agriculture are forcefully occupied with cows feeding on plants and polluted faeces. These herdsmen care not about the owner or location of the land but just to feast, destroying the economic purpose of the land. Thanks to the gods for sparing the lands of some Ijare residents some weeks back where a mysterious thunder struck some cattle that were led to d feed on the sacred land. Deliberations on the way forward on safety of lives and properties of citizens and residents of the South Western states led the governors to brainstorm a probable solution to the menace. A South Western Joint Security Network, "Amotekun" was proposed. Amotekun received praises and less criticisms when announced from the public. Trending controversial statements are reported daily on the security project, example is that of the Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami describing the security outfit as illegal where immediately the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yoruba land, Iba Gani Adams replied he goofed reminding him of similar security outfits like "Hisbah" that operates in the North. As the right to life can never be in the exclusive list of any government, the controversy on the legality of Amotekun will soon be a thing of the past as the South West governors and Inspector General of Police finally have adopted a model for its running. According to the IGP, the initiative will not be run as a regional security operation as initially suggested, it will be state-led effort. Also, the community policing model proposed by the IG was ratified and the initiative would be complementing Operation Amotekun and conventional police operations in all local communities. We have Osun and Oyo states executive approve Amotekun bill and passed to their various assemblies for final approval while Ondo, Ekiti, Lagos and Ogun assemblies approves and signs Amotekun bill into law. It is also observed that the South West governors plans to train OPC, Vigilantee, Hunters and Volunteers for the Amotekun duty. Security is about life and death. The police and other security agents can train them and license their gun use to greatly assist in the operation. They should not detain suspects but hand them over to the police.” The leopard cannot be tamed and it is such an unpredictable animal this remains the idea behind Amotekun as the Yorubas have shown that their intelligence is unpredictable and cannot be tamed for whatever reason.
