LASG adjured unemployed youths to get skills

The Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development , Mrs Uzamat Akinbile - Yusuf , has advised youths , especially those seeking employment opportunities , to acquire soft skills .
She explained that most employers of labour were showing interest in individuals ’ skills as against certificate qualifications .
The commissioner made this known on Thursday at the Youth Entrepreneurship Mentoring Seminar , with the theme, ‘ Learn a Skill ; Earn a Living , ’ in Alausa , Ikeja .
She said , “The government is committed to reducing the rate of unemployment by encouraging people to be self - employed . This prompted the establishment of the Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment to create wealth and employment opportunities .
“ The government is already in collaboration with fashion establishments to train 50 young people in the art of fashion design and garments under its Sustainable Enterprise Development Programme, ”
She added that several interventions by the government were aimed at raising the skill level of youths to match the demands and needs of the society .
The commissioner said the current rate of unemployment among graduates stemmed from the education system that placed emphasis on theoretical knowledge as against practical skills .
The Director of Entrepreneurship Department in the ministry , Mrs Taiwo Abiose , urged graduates to identify their passion and turn it to profit .
