Iwo Youths Protest Alleged Sidelining, Demand Osun Governorship Slot
Youths in Iwo Land have protested against what they call “political marginalisation” of the region as the choice of who succeeds Mr Rauf Aregbesola as the governor of Osun state continues to generate controversy.
Spokesperson for the group, Akin Ashifat, told reporters that the town has been grossly marginalised, despite its contributions to the democratic tenets of the state.
He claimed that Iwo Federal Constituency remains the only constituency in Osun without any Federal Government presence, including school, agency or parastatals.
“Iwo Federal Constituency remains the only constituency in Osun that has never produced a governor, deputy governor, hold a principal position in both Federal and State House of Assembly, minister, or ambassador,” Ashifat said.
“In 1951, Iwo was the fifth most populous city in Nigeria, only coming behind Kano, Ibadan, Enugu and Ogbomoso; it has one of the strongest economies in the country. Right now, the story has changed to worse due to continuous neglect from the political class.”
The group’s spokesperson also lamented that the purported marginalisation of Iwo has continued to affect the social and economic development of the constituency and her people.
“We have been used and dumped for decades. We are only relevant during an election and become moribund immediately after the election,” he alleged, asking “Must this deliberate neglect continue?”
“The entire Iwoland Youth has come together to make one demand. The next Governor of the state after Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola must come from Iwoland,” Ashifat insisted.
Iwo land is made up of three local governments – Ayedire, Iwo, and Ola-Oluwa, and it has a population of over 500,000 with a voting strength of more than 100,000 electorates
